Many of you asked where your local Mayoral and Councillor candidates stand on the issue of US Thermal Coal going to Fraser Surrey Docks? Although we are not endorsing any candidates as this is a personal choice and cannot be decided on the coal issue alone, we decided to email candidates in Delta, Surrey, & White Rock, (and based on your feedback, we just emailed Richmond too), to get their responses to the following 4 questions:
1. What is your position on the Issue?
2. Will you advocate for the inclusion of your city in Community and Coal’s legal challenge, and in the case of Surrey who has made public their intention to intervene, if elected, will you continue to support this initiative?
3. Would you be willing to work with other municipalities and share the cost of an independent, comprehensive Health Impact Assessment for the coal corridor?
4. In addition to questions #2 & #3, what other ideas do you have which could be implemented to protect the health of residents and the environment in communities which have coal trains passing through, with the potential of increased coal traffic in the future?
