On May 1, 2014 during question period, independent MLA Vicki Huntington questioned the Minister of Health, Terry Lake, and the Minister of the Environment, Mary Polak over the need for both a Health Impact Assessment (HIA) and an Environmental review on the Fraser Surrey Docks Proposal for the areas beyond the Port’s mandate. Thank you Vicki Huntington for bringing this forward in the Legislature and helping to continue the conversation over the need for the HIA and the province’s role. Not mentioned in the video is the fact that Port Metro Vancouver has stated that they have no intention of conducting a Health Impact Assessment. Based on Minister Polak’s response about the Health Authorities, one would conclude that we should expect that Minister Lake will be supporting his Chief Medical Health Officers by authorizing a Health Impact Assessment, if this proposal is approved by Port Metro Vancouver. Both Chief Medical Health Officers have previously stated that the Environmental Impact Assessment which was put forward by Fraser Surrey Docks was deeply flawed and had many, many unanswered questions.
